IELTS Scoring System

IELTS Band scale is from 0 to 9, and is reported in whole and half bands in four different criteria — Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The overall score is the average of all four sections.

9 Expert User Fully operational command of English with complete accuracy and fluency.
8 Very Good User Fully operational command with occasional inaccuracies or misunderstandings in unfamiliar situations.
7 Good User Operational command with occasional errors; can handle complex language well in familiar situations.
6 Competent User Generally effective command despite some errors and misunderstandings; good in familiar contexts.
5 Modest User Partial command; can cope with the overall meaning in most situations, but frequent mistakes may occur.
4 Limited User Basic competence limited to familiar situations; frequent communication breakdowns.
3 Extremely Limited User Conveys and understands only the general meaning in very familiar situations.
2 Intermittent User No real communication is possible except for basic information and isolated words.
1 Non-User Essentially, no ability to use the language beyond a few isolated words.
